Anaphora: Insights from Sign Language (Summary)*

Sign language anaphora is realized very differently from its spoken language counterpart. In simple cases, an antecedent is associated with a locus in signing space, and an anaphoric link is obtained by pointing towards that locus to recover its semantic value. It has been argued that this mechanism is an overt realization of the device of coindexation in formal syntax and semantics. Summarizin...

Quantifiers and Variables: Insights from Sign Language (ASL and LSF)

Natural language has expressions that have an analogous function: some noun phrases play the role of quantifiers (e.g. every man), and some pronouns play the role of variables (e.g. him, as in Every man likes people who admire him). Since the 1980’s, there has been a vibrant debate i...

Collection and Preprocessing of Czech Sign Language Corpus for Sign Language Recognition

This paper discusses the design, recording and preprocessing of a Czech sign language corpus. The corpus is intended for training and testing of sign language recognition (SLR) systems. The UWB-07-SLR-P corpus contains video data of 4 signers recorded from 3 different perspectives. Two of the perspectives contain whole body and provide 3D motion data, the third one is focused on signer’s face a...
